Community Spotlight:

Nuestros Niños/Childhood Matters, Inc.

Mission Statement
The mission of Childhood Matters, Inc, is to inform and inspire parents and all who care about children so that every child may be happy, healthy, and thrive. We provide a respectful and inclusive public forum through our interactive radio shows—Childhood Matters and Nuestros Niños—and other media in English and Spanish.

Vision Statement
All children will be cherished and those who care for and about them will have their voices heard, strengthening the community that values open dialogue, skill sharing, and the joys and challenges of raising children.

Nuestros Niños is a live, weekly call-in radio show on KLOK 1170 AM, KBBF 89.1 FM and KLOK 99.5 FM. It addresses parents and all concerned in the wellbeing of children. Nuestros Niños radio show strives to achieve the following goals:
• Increase knowledge and support for effective, healthy parenting.
• Promote healthy attachment between parents and their children.
• Increase sensitivity to cultural and ethnic strengths, differences, and challenges in raising children.
• Provide parents with tools to advocate for their children in schools and daycare, and with medical professionals, social services, and legislators.
• Encourage parent leadership and increase parent involvement and participation in the community.
• Contribute to humane parenting practices, and decrease mistreatment of children.
• Provide ongoing updated information about resources available to parents in the community.

The audience for this show
—parents, relatives, teachers, and other people who care for children— crosses all political, ethnic, and economic divisions in our society. The audience is anyone who is interested in helping children grow up to be healthy and productive adults.

Radio is a very powerful way to reach a large number of parents in a variety of circumstances. People can listen in their car, while they work, as they cook or rock a baby. Parents are invited to call in, toll free at 1-866-99NINOS, and ask for specific advice or resources.

We pay particular attention to children’s individual differences and cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The program presents positive parenting messages in language that is easily understood.

The Nuestros Niños Approach and Program

Nuestros Niños is an effective outreach tool to reach today’s diverse, mobile, and pressured parents. Additional important audiences include child care workers, teachers, grandparents, and other relatives. Tuning in to Nuestros Niños on a weekly basis, they can learn more about such topics as:
• Cultural differences in parenting practices.
• How to choose a good childcare provider.
• The importance of prenatal care for mothers and their babies.
• Encourage parent leadership and increase parent involvement and participation in the community.
• What to do to help your child get ready for kindergarten.
• How to accept your child’s temperament and your parenting style.
• How to get support for a child with a disability.
• The negative impact of parental tobacco use on children.
• Treatment of asthma and other diseases of childhood.
